Facade Design Workshop for The Common Room

Residents are invited to share their views on the design of The Common Room’s facade. The workshop will take place online on Sunday 7 February, from 11am-12.30pm.

The Common Room was first initiated as a partnership between Roman Road Trust, London Metropolitan University, Clarion Housing Association and Tower Hamlets Council’s Enterprise Team. A team of twenty students built the structure which was used as a community room and came to be known as ‘The Common Room.’

Since then it has been used as a space where residents can meet to discuss and share ideas. This has led to the creation of local initiatives such as the Roman Road Bow Neighbourhood Forum and Edible Bow.

The Facade Design Workshop will be led by Simeon Featherstone, who grew up in Bow and Anastasia Sledkova from ceramics-based practice PC Projects. Afterwards, Simeon and Anastasia will finalise the ceramic design before it is co-created with the community and then installed.

The Common Room is currently being transformed to become a fully-functional community learning venue. Funds for the project were raised through Crowdfund London 2020. Works are scheduled to commence in Spring 2021 with the facade being the final element to design.

The facade is to be designed with the community in mind. Roman Road Trust and Public Works are working closely with PC Projects to produce a tiled facade for The Common Room that will encapsulate the aims of the project. PC Projects will look to find the connections that represent a collective identity and sense of place.

Families are welcome to this informal, interactive, and fun workshop.
